The Second Law

The Book of Deuteronomy From a Christian Perspective
Oct. 9, 2016 – Nov. 20, 2016

On the brink of the Israelites’ entrance into the promised land, Moses spoke to the people. He reminded them about all they’d been through and warned them of what would happen to them if they rebelled against God. The book of Deuteronomy is the record of this moment, and it was one of Jesus’s favorite books to quote.

Message line-up:

10/9
Remembering and Forgetting
Pastor Scott Austin
Listen

A central theme in Deuteronomy is remembrance. Time after time, Moses tells the people to remember what God has done, and not to forget the covenant they had made. These dozens of reminders set up all the other themes in the book, and they ought to inspire us to remember our own stories with God.

10/16
Idols and Other Gods
Pastor Scott Austin
Listen

The clear and passionate prohibition against idolatry, which is found in the Ten Commandments and then repeated throughout Deuteronomy, is a foundational idea for understanding the rest of the book. But what does it mean for us today?

10/23
Egypt and Israel
Pastor Scott Austin
Listen

One of the recurring themes in Moses’s address to the people of Israel is the warning that if they are disobedient, they will be no better than the Egyptians who had enslaved them. This type of comparison to Israel’s enemies is common in the Hebrew Bible, and it encourages us to consider where we see ourselves in these comparisons.

10/30
Listen Up!
Pastor Scott Austin
Listen

Throughout the book of Deuteronomy, one command rings out again and again: listen. In this kid-friendly sermon, we’ll explore the idea of paying attention to what God is doing around us.

11/6
Empire and Election
Pastor Scott Austin
Listen

As this contentious political season draws to a close, we ponder what it means to be God’s people. Who rules us? How do we live as good citizens of our own country while remembering our allegiance is to Jesus? And what does it mean to be “God’s chosen people” in our world today?

11/13
Jesus and Jubilee
Pastor Scott Austin
Listen

When Jesus said “The poor you will always have with you”, he was referring to a passage from Deuteronomy. But the real message of that quotation has been widely misunderstood, and it may surprise you.

Matthew 26:6–13, Deuteronomy 15
11/20
Cities of Refuge
Pastor Scott Austin
Listen

In the book of Deuteronomy, Yahweh commands the Israelites to establish cities of refuge for people who were being unjustly pursued for accidental offenses. What would it look like for the church to be a modern day city of refuge?
