Experiencing John’s Gospel

The gospel of John is a fascinating telling of the life of Jesus. It contains unique stories, emphasizing the divinity of Jesus with stories of the miraculous signs he performed. We’re going to study the entire book together, a few weeks at a time.

6/2: Feeding the Five Thousand; Pastor Scott Austin; Listen; The feeding of 5,000 people is one of Jesus’ most famous miracles—and the fourth of the seven “signs of faith” in John’s gospel. What new thing can we learn from this familiar story and Jesus’ instruction to “gather up the fragments”?; John 6:1-14
6/9: Taking Jesus; Pastor Scott Austin; Listen; Twice in this story (which contains the fifth “sign of faith,”) John tells us that Jesus’ disciples try to “take him” but are unable to do so. Apparently, then, it is possible to pursue Jesus without being in accord with his will. This story may hold some clues about how we can reconcile this paradox of faith.; John 6:15-26
6/16: Bread From Heaven, Part 1; Pastor Scott Austin; Listen; After the miraculous feeding of five thousand people, Jesus has a long and fascinating discussion with his followers about their motivations for seeking him and his identity as “the bread from heaven.” This week, we’re looking at the first part of that discussion.; John 6:27-40
6/23: Bread From Heaven, Part 2; Pastor Scott Austin; Listen; The second half of the discussion described in the preceding passage ends with a shocking statement by Jesus, a cliffhanger for when we return to the book of John next.; John 6:41-71
