Lent 2017

March 5, 2017 – April 16, 2017

Lent is a season of penitence and preparation for the joy of Easter. In this series, we will be guided through this season by appropriate Bible texts as arranged in the Revised Common Lectionary. We encourage you to read the weekly texts ahead of time and come prepared for God’s work in your life and in our community!

Message line-up:

3/5
Confessing For Freedom
Scott Austin
Listen

On the first Sunday in Lent, we ponder how confession moves us from “wasting away through groaning” to “shouts of joy” by drawing us into the free gift of God’s grace.

Genesis 2:15-17, 3:1-7; Psalm 32; Romans 5:12-19; Matthew 4:1-11
3/12
Abraham’s Heirs
Chris Sullivan
Listen

The biblical story opens with the creation of a very good world which quickly plummets in a downward spiral brought on by human sin and violence. God intervenes in Genesis 12 by calling Abram into a radical journey of trust and blessing that will ultimately lead to creation’s renewal. On this second Sunday in Lent, we will explore the trajectory of Abram’s call and how God’s promises to Abram give us hope in a world still marred with sin.

Genesis 12:1-4a; Psalm 121; Romans 4:1-5, 13-17; John 3:1-17; Matthew 17:1-9
3/19
Hope in the Wilderness
Scott Austin

All of us have asked the question the Israelites asked in their thirsty wanderings: “Is the Lord among us or not?” Wherever your wilderness lies, Jesus is there to offer you “living water” to quench the thirst of your soul.
