Advent 2020

Ready for a new beginning?
Nov. 29, 2020 – Dec. 20, 2020

The season of Advent is the beginning of the Christian liturgical year, a time when we dwell in darkness and uncertainty in anticipation of something beautiful and new. In 2020, a year we are all more than ready to say goodbye to, we will seek new beginnings in the arrival of God in our midst. Advent says: Lord Jesus, be near us!

Pastor Scott Austin

This week's Advent passages give us words for a wide range of religious expression: desperate pleading for God’s presence to burst onto the scene, steadfast belief in God’s faithfulness, and lots in between.

“God’s time is not our time.” In one sense, this aphorism is a helpful truth. But in another sense, it can lead us to become complacent, missing out on the incredible responsibility we have been given to “hasten the coming of the day of God.”

Isaiah 40:1-11, Psalm 85:1-2, 8-13, 2 Peter 3:8-15, Mark 1:1-8

Psalm 126 shows us a range of time, with the people both pining for the “good old days” and desperately hoping for a better future. And of course, it was written in the frustrating present—which is when we all live. What’s more: we have great power (and responsibility) in this present time.

Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11, Psalm 126, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24, John 1:6-8, 19-28
