Lent

From ashes to celebration
February 14 – March 25, 2018

Beginning with Ash Wednesday, Lent is a season of reflection, repentance, and preparation before the holy celebration of Easter. We will be shaped by the words of scripture as we travel this road together.

Message line-up:

Water and Sky
Pastor Scott Austin

An ark. A baptism. A dove. A rainbow. These intertwining images from the Jewish and Christian scriptures point us to a beautiful truth about our lives and our hope.

(Genesis 9:8-17; Psalm 25:1-10; 1 Peter 3:18-22; Mark 1:9-15)

The Promise Rests on Grace
Pastor Scott Austin

It is difficult for modern Christians to understand what it means to be “descendants” of Abraham, because we long for a transactional salvation: do X/Y/Z, and be saved. But the work of salvation is faith: simply to trust the promise.

(Genesis 17:1-7, 15-16; Psalm 22:23-31; Romans 4:13-25; Mark 8:31-38)
3/4
Justice That Restores
Rev. Dominique Gilliard

A special Lenten message from Dominique Dubois Gilliard, author of Rethinking Incarceration.

(Exodus 20:1-17; Psalm 19; 1 Corinthians 1:18-25; John 2:13-22)

Raised Up to Rise Up
Pastor Scott Austin

A bronze serpent raised up in the wilderness. A radical teacher raised up on a cross. And the astonishing promise that we have been raised up with him. Will we rise to the call?

(Numbers 21:4-9; Psalm 107:1-3, 17-22; Ephesians 2:1-10; John 3:14-21)
3/18
Planting Seeds, Giving Water
James Harrington

We are joined by James Harrington, founder and director of the Ugandan Water Project, for a timely and inspiring message about one way we can stay connected to our foundational value of justice.

(Jeremiah 31:31-34; Psalm 51:1-12; Psalm 119:9-16; Hebrews 5:5-10; John 12:20-33)
3/25
Palm Sunday

One of our favorite new traditions at Artisan: a very special kid-centric Palm Sunday celebration!
