Lent 2014

The Problem Lies With Me
March 5, 2014 – April 13, 2014

Lent is traditionally a season of repentance, reflection, and preparation for Easter. This year, we will be focusing closely on repentance, admitting our part in the brokenness of the world and trusting to the grace of Jesus to redeem not only his whole world, but each one of us who inhabit it.

Message line-up:

3/5
Ash Wednesday (joint service at Community of the Savior)

Details here.

3/9
First Sunday in Lent
Pastor Scott Austin
Listen

The story of the fall (Genesis) tells us that sin breaks our fellowship with God. The epistle reading (Romans) tells us that the cure for this disease is Jesus. And the gospel story (Matthew) offers an example and a warning about responding to the temptation to sin.

Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-7; Psalm 32; Romans 5:12-19; Matthew 4:1-11
3/16
Second Sunday in Lent
Jesse Peers, Chris Sullivan, and Brian Grossman
Listen

Three members of the Artisan community share brief reflections on the Lectionary passages for the week.

Genesis 12:1-4a; Psalm 121; Romans 4:1-5, 13-17; John 3:1-17; Matthew 17:1-9
3/23
Third Sunday in Lent
Pastor Scott Austin
Listen

A guided Ignatian reading of Exodus 17 (the story of the Israelites wandering and thirsty) and John 4 (the story of Jesus offering “living water” to a Samaritan woman).

Exodus 17:1-7; Psalm 95; Romans 5:1-11; John 4:5-42
3/30
Fourth Sunday in Lent
Pastor Scott Austin
Listen

The stories of the anointing of King David and Jesus’ healing of a man born blind show us that God looks at our hearts, not our outward appearances. This can be reassuring, but it’s also unsettling to think that God sees through our own phoniness. This demands a serious call to repentance.

1 Samuel 16:1-13; Psalm 23; Ephesians 5:8-14; John 9:1-41
4/6
Fifth Sunday in Lent
Pastor Scott Austin
Listen

Ezekiel’s vision in the valley of dry bones is bizarre and striking, and the lesson it may contain for us is equally bizarre and striking: God wants to breathe life into us if we are “spiritual zombies”.

Ezekiel 37:1-14; Psalm 130; Romans 8:6-11; John 11:1-45
4/13
Palm Sunday
Pastor Scott Austin
Listen
Psalm 118:1-2, 19-29; Matthew 21:1-11
